While enjoying our dinner at East Ender's, we struck up a conversation with Jo, our super awesome waitress/bartender. She, like myself and Jess shared a love of food, and asked if we had been to Bresca. When we replied "No", she immediately told us to make our reservations and get there as soon as possible. All that I can say is "Thank you, Jo!"

Bresca is small, like eight tables small. A reservation isn't recommended, it is required. Fortunately, the staff are great to work with for call in reservations, or if you want you can use their online reservation system. I am not going to gush on the quality of the food, the pictures speak for themselves. If I can make one recommendation, it is that you try the Roasted Marrow Bone first course. It is honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten anywhere.

Maine 2011!

Alright kids, it's the second week of August, and that means yet another trip up north! I want to do something a little different this year and only review our new culinary experiences (with the exception of Francine). Most of the usual haunts haven't changed since last year, and it would be boring to show more photos of the best lobster roll in Maine (Sea Basket) or the usual diner fare from Moody's. Instead, we are making a conscious effort to explore some new favorite eateries.
The first stop of note was the Sweetgrass Winery and Distillery located outside of Union, Maine. Specializing in small batch wines and spirits, this family run farm is well worth the trip off the beaten path.

The second location visited was recently featured in Maine magazine. Located next door to Duckfat (another one of our favorites), East Ender is new to the Portland food scene. Even though the doors have only been opened for 8 months, East Ender provides a comfortable dining atmosphere that feels like it has always been here. The food is a creative blend of local ingredients that will leave you staggering out the door; food drunk and happy.

While cleaning out photos on my computer today, I came across our photos from last summer's trip to Maine. Now I attempted to keep a travelogue of our vacation, but failed on ever uploading shots from the last day. Now, as I sit here, with winter still lingering outside my door, I find my thoughts wandering those 600 miles north, back to Vacationland, and one of my very favorite places on this Earth. This one goes out to all of my fellow Yorkers; especially those of you who used to frequent Mezzogiorno at Central Market. Jess and Giovanni have opened their new restaurant, Giovanni's Pizza, in Hanover. Granted, it is a little bit of a hike from York, but it is totally worth the trip. Jess told us last night that they have been open for about 3 weeks, and if the crowd last night was any indication, they are off to a great start. Giovanni is truly in his element, with a spacious kitchen that he designed himself. While he misses his regulars, he feels that this is where he is supposed to be. When we walked in, it felt like we were home. I urge all of you to make it a point to head to Hanover and support Giovanni's Pizza!

Wednesday, September 8th, Caplive and XPN hosted the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Capitol Theater in York, PA. Playing to a sold out house, CCD and openers Waiting on a Train captivated the audience for over 2 hours with traditional blue grass, Appalachian folk, and southern blues. If you missed this show, then check out our photos and some of the shots from The Susquehanna Photographic. They are almost as good as being there!

I also tried my hand at shooting video last night. I hope you enjoy this little piece of awesome!

I will be the first to admit that I have lost all track of time while up here. The days seem to blend together in a blur of clear skies and 70 degree temperatures. Before I know it it is Thursday and I have some catching up to do. I will keep the descriptions short and sweet as there is much ground to cover.

Tuesday:

Breakfast was ebelskivers made with fresh, Maine blueberries and some blueberry sausage. Do you see a pattern developing?

After breakfast, we headed south to Bath to visit their Down Town area and take some photos. We ended up in a little coffee shop for lunch. I had a wonderful roast beef sandwich and fresh tomato soup, while Jess tackled a spinach quiche with potato salad. We topped off this meal with a blueberry soda and hit the road once again to Popham Beach.

After spending the afternoon on the beach with some friends from York, we returned to Bath to visit J.R. Maxwell's. Now if some of you feel that I like everything just a little too much, get ready for a surprise.

I can say a few positives about dinner, the beer was good and the conversation entertaining, but that is about it. I ordered an appetizer of crab stuffed mushrooms only to find on arrival over-broiled button mushrooms with more breading than actual crab.

My baked, stuffed lobster was better, but definitely not great. The scallops and lobster were well cooked, however they were completely over-powered by the breading.

Wednesday:

This is the day that we had been anxiously awaiting. Tonight we were to dine at Francine! Alas, our reservations were not until 6:00, so we had to find something to do in the meantime. Eat you say? But of course. We opted for a light breakfast and spent some time hanging out at the house until about noon. Heading north on Rt. 1, we ended up at Moody's!

Moody's is quintessential Maine. Since the 1920's, this roadside diner has been dishing out Maine classics to locals and tourists alike. We make it a point to stop here every year. I opted for a Lobster Roll and a cup of clam chowda while Jess tried the fried shrimp roll with a side of Moody's famous potato salad.

Too full for dessert, we promised that we would return later for a slice or two of their world famous pies.

We continued our northward journey, until 5:00 told us that it was time to head to Camden for our 6:00 reservations at Francine. We met Lori and Erik (Jess' parents) outside of the bistro and were seated and ordering by 6:00.

We started the meal with drinks and appetizers. I ordered a blueberry infused gin drink topped with soda water and elderberry liqueur. Amazing.

Our appetizers consisted of a Vermont quail with cornbread salad, bacon and blackberries; Skillet roast rope grown mussels, pine, lime, sea salt and black butter; and a sweet corn soup with Chanterelles and basil.

For our entrees, we chose the steak frites, pan roasted local chicken, and a fried haddock wrapped in rice paper with fresh crab.

I will not gush about how spectacular the meal was. I can only tell you that there is a reason we come back here year after year without fail.

We stopped at Moody's, again, on the way home to pick up some pie. While snapping some frames of the restaurant dressed in her evening finery, I was photo-bombed by the awesome gentleman sitting in a window booth. Jess pointed him out to me, so I gave him the thumbs-up which was returned with a smile.

When we returned to the house, I heard a very distinctive, and haunting cry coming from the woods. A Barred Owl had taken up residence nearby and decided to serenade us with his very unique call. If you hear it once, you will never forget it. I of course was giddy when I hear the distinctive "Who-Cooks-For-You" welcoming us home for the evening.

Many of you, and by that I mean the five people who actually read this blog, probably missed my post last night. Not to worry, I was tired, full of blueberry ale and ready for an early night. Now that I am awake, let's recap, shall we?

Monday was a low-key day and we spent most of it with Jess' parents, Lori and Erik. A trip to some local antique stores yielded delightful maritime treasures by way of a calabash pipe set for me and some vintage cookware for Jess.

On the way home, we decided that sustenance was needed and so we stopped by the Newcastle Publick House in Damariscotta.

We kicked off the meal with a Dog Days of Summer Wheat brewed by The Liberal Cup out of Hallowell, ME. This was one of the more solid wheat's that I have had and will definitely try to bring some back home.

Appetizers consisted of a delightful shrimp cake with dill sauce, and Angry Al's oysters baked with spinach, hot sauce, bacon and Gorgonzola.

As for the main entree's, Jess chose a burger with sauteed mushrooms and onions topped with a Boursin cheese. From now on, I decree that all cheeseburgers be made this way. Sorry for your luck if you are not a fan of garlic.

I opted for the Oyster Po' Boy. What can I say, I am a sucker for spicy shellfish sandwiches. Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I like a little heat with my food, and this remoulade did not disappoint. The oysters were breaded in a light house mixture that did not overpower their subtle flavors, and the crisp roll added just the right amount of texture to finish out each bite.

Lori and Erik ordered a shellfish pizza and barbecued pork sandwich respectively. The pizza was very well done, with just the slightest amount of fishiness to the shrimp; while Erik's sandwich was gone before I could try a bite.

We ended the night back at the house where I mixed up a gin and tonic using Hendrick's gin and we proceeded to cook the shellfish we picked up after lunch. Oysters, steamers and lobster left us feeling satiated and sleepy as we planned for Tuesday's adventures.

One Bite at a Time

It is August, and here at Digital Ephemera Photography that can mean only one thing. If you are one of our friends who has graciously suffered the constant barrage of "Whoo hoo, we are going to Maine," over the past few weeks, then you already know that we have made the 10 1/2 hour drive North to the great vacation-land of the continental United States. We arrived on Saturday, and as promised to so many of you, I will attempt to take photos of any meals that we eat while on our adventures in this culinarily diverse state.

We start our food tour just outside of the little town of Wiscasset (pronounced Wis-Cah-Sit in the local patois), at an often under-appreciated restaurant named the Sea Basket. To us, the Sea Basket marks the final stretch, before we reach our home for the week; and also our first taste of Maine. Jess and I have a standing agreement that the first and last taste of "Lahbsta" will come from this road-side establishment, and for six years running we have not deviated from said pact. The Sea Basket offers your Maine staples such as: Lobster bisque, fried seafood, whoopie pies, and the holy grail of Maine cuisine, Lobster Roll. Now, I am not an official expert int he field of Lobster Roll gastronomy, but I can say that I have consumed more than enough to be considered an aficionado; and as such, I will say that the Lobster Roll from the Sea Basket is the best in Maine.

Jess and our friend Dave both ordered the fried scallop basket, which given the unique convection frying technique, yield some of the most perfectly cooked mollusks that you will have the pleasure to consume.

Day One ends with a lobster boil at the house, a light aperitif after the meal followed by pipes on the deck. A good nights rest was necessary because today we tackled Portland!

Portland, Maine is the foodies paradise of Mid Coast. With a hip attitude, and culinary risk takers abound, you will never be lacking for a great meal while visiting this maritime city.

Stop number one was Duck Fat. Have you heard of Duck Fat? If not, click the link. Go ahead, we will wait.

Duck Fat is a hipsters paradise and I don't mean in a bad way. We arrived around 12:30 and the place was packed. Duck Fat's claim to fame are their unique Belgium Frites that are fried in, yep, duck fat. With a cone of the golden ambrosia, you are treated to a choice of gourmet dipping sauces. Today we chose the garlic aoli and the Thai chili mayo.

Taking our food to go, we continued to the waterfront, wandering the streets and cobble-stoned back alleys of the vibrant shopping district of Portland. Eventually, a rest was deemed in order and we found ourselves in front of the Merry Table" Creperie.

After a brief look at the menu, it was decided that what we needed now were crepes. Jess and Dave both ordered desert crepes ( a fruit rouge et mascarpone cheese crepe and lemon sucre crep respectively), while I decided to indulge with the lobster newberg crepe with fresh asparagus and greens paired with a Geary's Summer Ale.

Crepes are one of those things that take a practiced hand to perfect and a discerning pallet to detect. I can say that, without a doubt, this restaurant nailed it. The crepes were just the right consistency without becoming chewy, and that every ingredient in the dishes complimented the others to a "T".

A few more stops in Portland, and a few more conversations about supporting local businesses, and we were on our way. Dave heading south for Boston, and Jess and myself heading north to New Harbor. Dinner this evening was fried, fresh caught haddock, a squash medley, and a dish of baked scallops. Drink of the evening was a lovely Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale.

As some of you may know, we have made our annual pilgrimage to the great state of Lobster and Blueberries, also Moose, there are Moose. If by now you have not guessed, we are in Maine, and what better way to pass the time than eat. Of course there is the quintessential Lobster Roll, or as I like to refer to it Ambrosia (not the crappy marshmallow salad but the food of the gods) but also some of the best cuisine that you can find in the New England states. Tonight we traveled to the tourist town of Camden, Maine to visit one of our favorite restaurants: Francine Bistro. Francine has become a must-have night out for the past four years, and they have yet to cease to amaze me. Tonight's meal featured Barbequed Lamb Riblets with fresh beets and honey, an herb roast lobster with courgettes, chantrells, corn grits and carmelized garlic, and pan roasted steak with herb frites. As we left, "Happy Cat" greeted us for a scritch on the head and a farewell until next year when we will undoubtably return.

Day Four

Only 7 miles under our feet today, but we saw quite a bit. Starting off our morning, we headed down the road to the organic market at Boulevard Raspail. There I saw the gates of Foodie Heaven. Stretching for a city block was more fresh produce, fish, seafood, meats, breads and cheeses than I have ever seen. For this reason alone I will greatly miss Paris! Continuing on our journey we came upon the Jardin du Luxembourg, a massive park that culminates with a reflecting pool in front of the Senate house. The weather was gorgeous and the garden played host to a mulitude of Parisians and tourists all basking in the warm, spring sunlight. Jess relaxed on some provided chairs while I snapped photos, stopping to take a shot for the polite tourist and generally making a spectical of myself as "that guy" with the huge camera. From there we boarded the Metro for a journey to the Place' Du Bastille and our second market of the day. Two rows of vendors awaited the culinary needs of Paris, calling our their wares and generally lambasting one another as to who had the freshest goods. We pushed our way through the crowds to find the salt vendor that Jess so loves, or at least his replacement, as the original has since moved on. Purchasing some Saucisson from a Boulanger from dinner, we headed for the Louvre. As this was my first time in Paris, I had to see the essentials (Aprodite aka. the Venus De Milo, that old hag Lisa and the winged victory) as well as the wonderful Egyptian exhibit. I would like to say that yes, I did take a picture of the Mona Lisa, and no it is not that of your typical tourist. We ended our day at the Musee D'Orsay drooling over funiture from the Art Noveau period and generally browsing the exhibits. We arrived back at the apartment and as I began to work on photos from today, we were greeted by the sounds of a wandering street musician playing the accordion. In all honesty, my trip to Paris would not have been complete without that. Tomorrow is our last day in Paris (sadly) but I have a strong feeling that we will return much sooner than later.

We found the infamous Weasel Poo Coffee today at Bon Marche and before you ask, no, we did not purchase any. Why, you may wonder, did we not purchase this? I had said that I will attempt to post a new image for each day that we are in Paris. Jet lagged though we are, we soldiered on through the day and visited the Champ D'Elysse, and the Arc D'Triomph. 283 stairs later, we had a magnificent view of Paris at dusk and I can now truly appreciate the city's other name "The City of Lights." I hope you enjoy the photos and you will hear from me soon.

Ashley S. Rexgrave stopped by the studio on Sunday and man did we have some fun! I wanted to go for the vintage, painted Elvgren girl look with this and for my first real dabbling in photoshop, I am pleased. If you are ever looking for a petite model with the Rockabilly look, Ashley is a natural. Her hair and makeup were done by Natural Novak.

Leg Up Farm

On Thursday, November 13, Leg Up farms was awarded 5.6 million dollars in loans through York Traditions Bank and the USDA's Rural Development branch to begin construction.

From their website: "Leg Up Farm is a proposed, comprehensive therapy center being built in York County for children with special needs and their families. Incorporated in 1997, Leg Up Farm will offer a variety of therapeutic services to children ranging in age from birth to 21 using a highly effective interdisciplinary team approach coined the Circle of Care. The ultimate goal of Leg Up Farm is to help each child with special needs reach their full potential... regardless of their disability or financial situation. Leg Up Farm is a registered tax-exempt, non-profit charitable organization in accordance with Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS rules."

I have been privileged to know the Castriota family for over 17 years and cannot be happier to see Lou Jr's dreams come to fruition. He has worked extremely hard for this and the community will be a better place for all of his perseverance. I was also honored to be asked to photograph the event along with news crews from WHP 21 and Fox 43 news at 10.

After a slight faux-pas and correction, the full resolution images are now floating merrily through cyberspace to the Czech Republic. I am not sure when we will hear back from the editor of the magazine, but I will keep you updated. All four of you who are reading this anyway :) One last shot from Meeshel's shoot and then it is on to wedding photos and a local theater groups production of Oklahoma (insert show tunes here). This last photo is what Stacy referred to as the "sex kitten" look.

Today I was able to start a journey that I hope will open many doors for me. I couldn't be happier to have Meeshel and Stacy in the studio to photography Meeshel's tattoos. Stacy (www.chromegardens.com , www.tattoosbystacy.com) is the artist of Meeshel's extensive artwork and was present to offer some great posing advice for this shoot. To truly appreciate these tattoos, you have to see them in person; I can only hope that these pictures will do them justice. Thanks again Meeshel and Stacy, you guys are a tremendous support to me and I am forever greatful!

New Website in the works

Thanks to my super-talented brother-in-law Josh, I have a new website! Currently it is in production, but we have been brainstorming and the ideas are coming together. I have anxiously been refreshing the site every couple minutes and have been delighted to see something new each time I look. This is a start of a very important chapter for Digital Ephemera Photography and I am glad that my family is playing such and integral part in it.

On a much different note; I have been asked to donate a print to benefit the Nurse Family Partnership. The framed photo will be auctioned off at a charity dinner on Thursday night to raise money for this fantastic program. Additional prints will be available for sale upon request. The photo can be found above.

I met today with a bride-to-be and her fiancee' to hash out details for their big day. Unfortunately it is not until next May; but on the plus side we have plenty of time to plan out their photojournalist style wedding photos!

The bride's dress was absolutely gorgeous and was begging for a selective color photo. I ran the original image though the DXO film pack under the Velvia 100 setting as is does wonders for greens and blues. After some slight curve adjustments for the black and white, we have the final product. Jess and I are planning on surprising the couple with a few choice prints from their wedding.
